In 1865, the Willet-Holthuysens converted the largest room on the first floor into a reception room. The ballroom hosted musical performances, literary evenings and costume balls.

Inspired by the prevailing French fashion of the period, the ballroom furnishings and upholstery are in the opulent Louis XVI style. The couple spent 127,000 guilders on ordering interior textiles from Paris alone – the equivalent of more than €540,000! The future of the ballroom hung in the balance for a long while, but it is now considered to be one of the finest 19th-century Dutch interiors to have stood the test of time.
